  6. Country Description:  Australia is a highly developed stable democracy with
  7. a federal-state system.  Tourist facilities are widely available.
  8.  
  9. Entry Requirements:  Passport, visa, and onward/return transportation are
  10. required.  Transit visas are not required for a stay of up to eight hours at
  11. the airport.  For further information concerning longer stays or any other
  12. Australian regulations, travelers may contact the Embassy of Australia at
  13. 1601 Massachusetts Avenue, Washington, D.C. 20036, telephone (202) 797-3000
  14. or Australian Consulates General in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu,
  15. Chicago, New York, or Houston.

  17. Medical Facilities:  Good medical care is widely available.  Doctors and
  18. hospitals may expect immediate cash payment for health services.  U.S.
  19. medical insurance is not always valid outside the United States.
  20. Supplemental medical insurance with specific overseas coverage has proved
  21. useful.  Information on health matters can also be obtained from the Centers
  22. for Disease Control's international travelers hotline at tel. (404) 332-4559.

  24. Information on Crime:  Australia's crime rate is low.  However, foreign
  25. visitors from the U.S. or elsewhere are targets for pick-pockets, purse
  26. snatchers and petty thieves.  Automobile burglaries and theft of personal
  27. belongings also occur.  The loss or theft abroad of a U.S. passport should
  28. be reported immediately to the local police, and the nearest U.S. embassy or
  29. consulate.  Useful information on guarding valuables and protecting personal
  30. security while traveling abroad is provided in the Department of State
  31. pamphlet, "A Safe Trip Abroad."  It is available from the Superintendent of

  34. Drug Penalties:  Travelers are subject to the laws and legal practices of
  35. the country in which they travel.  Penalties for possession, use, or
  36. trafficking in illegal drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect
  37. jail sentences and fines.

  39. Registration:  Americans who register at the U.S. Embassy or a consulate may
  40. obtain updated information on travel and security within the country.
